Saddle Stitched
Booklets
8-80 pgs

These books are also referred to as booklets,
and involve stapling spreads together to form a folded book
You want to use a saddle-stitched bindery format when you have a page count that is under 80 pages in total. When you go above 80 pages in a saddle-stitched format, the book doesn't read well as the pages don't really sit flat. We recommend using a thicker paper for the cover, and usually apply a laminate to one side of the cover. Below are some key points to remember about saddle-stitched booklets.
We recommend that you use saddle a stitched bindery format when:
your book is under 80 pages including the cover
magazines, manuals, short stories, books with full crossover spreads
your book's total page count is a multiple of 4
choose from a self cover (same paper for the cover and interior pages) or a plus cover (different paper for the cover and interior pages)

Plastic Coil
Books
8-500 pgs

These books are also referred to as coil bound or spiral bound,
and involve punching each page with a special hole pattern and inserting a plastic coil through
You want to use a plastic coil bindery type for books that are high and need to be written in. We recommend using a thicker paper for the cover - or a clear plastic cover - and getting creative with a special colour coil like red or yellow. The main standard colours of plastic coil we offer are white and black.
We recommend that you use a plastic coil bindery type when:
your book has a high page count like 80 or more
the book is going to be written in (workbooks) or pressed flat
catalogs, workbooks, log books, instruction or field manuals
add a clear plastic cover or print the pages on synthetic plastic paper for extreme durability and waterproof features

Softcover Perfect Bound
32-500 pgs

These books are also referred to as paperback or softback books, and require folding a thicker cover around interior pages and gluing the book block to the cover to form a spine
The perfect bound book is probably the most popular style of book that we make. It's the optimal choice for high page counts and low page counts (but minimum of 32 pages) as we need at least 1/16 of an inch stack height for the book block. The book block being the interior pages stacked in the order they're bound in. We always use a thicker cover than the interior pages for softcover books, and crease the cover where the spine will be formed before gluing the book block to the cover.
We recommend that you use a softcover perfect bound bindery type when:
you want a highly professional looking book
the book content is a children's book or intended for a younger audience
catalogs, novels, paperback storybooks, magazines
the book block height (or spine) is between 0.0625" and 2.25"

Hardcover Smythe Sewn (Lay Flat)
32-500 pgs

These books are also referred to as hardback or sewn hardcover books, and and involve folding pages printed in groups of 8 or 16 page signatures and sewing them together to form a book block, then casing the book block into a hardcover
You want to use a hardcover smythe sewn bindery type when you want a really high impact book that will definitely turn heads and wow your reader. It's the pinnacle of book binding, allowing for pages to lay totally flat and no image deletion's across the spine. The cover is a thick board stock that is about 1/8" thick or more, and can be wrapped with a printed image (image-wrap) or wrapped with a textile like linen, leather, or specialty materials like Arrestox, Fiscagoma or even unwrapped to expose the raw board. We love to produce hardcover smythe sewn books and have a special process that we use to make these books in our shop with a wide variety of cover wrap options.
A lot of suppliers will offer glued hardcover books, which is very different than what we offer. Our hardcover books are all smythe-sewn, which allows the book to lay flat, compared to glued hardcover books which do not lay flat. Our specific style of press allows us to print books in 8 or 16 page signatures, in short run quantities. We think you should definitely go with a lay-flat hardcover instead of a glued hardcover.
We recommend that you use a hardcover smythe sewn bindery type when:
your book has a page count that is a multiple of 16 (this is a requirement for the sewing process) and is at least 32 pages
you want to sell the book at a high price or have a slipcase for them (a slipcase is a box with one end that is open and holds a book or a series of books
the cover has special effects like embossing, foil stamping or a combinatino of both
