Book Graphic Design & Layout Questions
All about book design and graphic design and how our design process works.
Can we supply a Word document?
Absolutely, if you're writing your book in Word, Google Docs, or some other word processing software, just send us that and we'll be able to work with it. Sometimes we even format the document for you by fitting it to end result's size and bindery format, and send it back to you for final text placement. When you're all done your document, send it to us and our professional graphic designers and typesetters will use that document to reformat it into industry specific software like InDesign or Illustrator.
Can you design the cover and interior of the book?
Absolutely, book design is the starting point for all jobs we do. Our project managers will get your information from our contact form, and then reach out with some questions or options on how to begin. Design is a very important process that outlines the end result and provides structure for the project as a whole. For example, if we're making a hardcover bound book, the design foundation will be different than a softcover bound book, as there are limitations to each bindery format. Our designers will look at the amount of text and images your book will have and recommend a design style for your approval. We usually show you an interior layout first, then the cover comes later after we have the interior structure defined - as the interior usually influences the cover design.
Do you have a catalog of layouts that we can choose from?
No, we don't have a preset layout catalog. We take a different approach - where each project is custom designed and themed according to our designer's discretion after a consultation with the author. We provide you with a couple options, and ask which one you prefer or like better, from there, we can lock in a layout theme and complete the interior layout. The cover is always custom designed and involves more collaboration with the designer and author to get a finalized version approved to print.
Do you have a book design software that we can use ourself?
No, we don't have a software or book designer like some websites that offer a Do-It-Yourself design tool. We take a different approach, where we carefully design each page individually for your project and send you a PDF proof to review before it's approved to print.
General Book Printing Questions
Find answers to questions about printing books with us and what exactly we offer compared to other providers.
What kind of papers can I choose from to print by book on?
There are lots of options when it comes to paper, if you have a specific brand or type in mind - let us know - chances are we can source it and use that for your book. However, we've curated a small group of papers that work best for most projects, and these papers are available for all jobs and sutiable for the majority of projects - whether there are lots of photos, only text, or combination of both - we have the right paper for your project. Our favourite papers are uncoated, with a vellum texture - similar to an eggshell paint finish - as we find it has the tactile properties that we love when turning or touching a page, and our printers are tuned up to print on these papers with exceptional quality.
How much does it cost to print books?
The cost to print a book with us is very different according to the project. Usually, the book printing cost is less than the design cost, and sometimes we don't even charge for the printing and include it in the design cost.
We can always print a sample book for you, which is going to cost somewhere between $800-2500 for a single copy depending on how many special effects are needed. If there are no special effects, then the cost to print a sample is on the lower end of the spectrum. If you want things like custom foil, embossing/debossing, spot UV coatings, special laminates and tactile finishes, then the cost to print one book is on the higher end of the spectrum.
Do your books lay flat when they're bound?
Yes, our hardcover bound books lay flat, which means you can press pages down across the spine and there will be no image deletions across the spine. This is possible because all of our hardcover books are smythe sewn, which is a process whereby pages are printed in 8 page signatures and sewn together to form sections.
Our softcover books do not lay flat, which means there is a visible deletion of the image when it crosses over the spine. Softcover books are best suited to projects where there are no crossovers - and our designers will avoid laying out images across the spine when designing for this bindery format. However, in some cases it's necessary to have crossovers in a softcover, and we will warn you of the deletion that will be present in final bound form.
Do you offer Print-On-Demand (POD) services?
Not exactly, we are not a quick-printer like some other providers out there. If you're looking for a quick turnaround and have files ready to print, that's not for us. We can recommend you to some of our industry peers who can offer this kind of service though, and sometimes we will decline a project if it doesn't fit within the boundaries of our service offerings.
Can you ship books around the world and distribute them to my readers?
Yes, we can do that for you and this kind of service is priced separately from the design and printing costs of a project. For example, if we designed and printed a batch of books for you, we can handle shipping them to your readers or relatives and friend around the world. Costs for shipping are 100% dependent on the location we're shipping to, there are no flat rates for these services, and we will use discount shipping providers like Chit Chats, Stallion Express and Canada Post. All shipments will come with tracking links and insurance.

Can we talk about the project on the phone?
Absolutely, a phone call is the best way to communicate about your project, and we are real people over here (not robots) that can speak to all the questions you might have. The first starting point for any project is that you fill out our form, and then we'll get your contact info and call you to discuss the project further.
Can we meet in person?
Absolutely, we can host you at our office and production facility by appointment only. We're located near the airport in Toronto - and can also show you some of our equipment and samples when you come in.
Can you scan a bunch of old photos?
Yes, we can take your photographs or originals and scan them. It's common that authors provide original photos and letters or newspaper clippings to be included in their book. You can also supply digital assets and scan them yourself if you prefer.
